Welcome to Adelaide Midwives
Private pregnancy, birth and post-birth care
I am proud to offer a unique blend of expertise and client-centred care for women in all stages of pregnancy, through birth and up to 6 weeks post-birth.

My name is Sue Macfarlan and I am a Privately Practising Midwife providing private pregnancy, birth and post-birth care in Adelaide.
After having initially trained and worked as a Registered Nurse, I also became a Midwife in 1986, which has been my chosen profession since then. The first part of my career was spent working in all areas of maternity care, along with some maternity leave breaks to have my 3 (now grown-up) children.
Since 2000 I have worked as a senior midwife in the Lyell McEwin Hospital Birth Centre and have gained valuable experience carrying out woman-centred midwifery care and negotiating for women's choices for pregnancy and birth. I will continue to work in the Birth Centre while building up my private practice to a full-time occupation.
If you are looking for a caring, experienced, motivated Privately Practising Midwife to guide you through your pregnancy, childbirth and new parenting journey, I can assist you to accommodate your hopes and wishes within a continuity of midwifery care model. Through developing rapport and trust with a known midwife, you can make informed choices for your care, resulting in flexible, woman-centred decisions.

Midwifery Philosophy

I believe that all women are entitled to woman-centred midwifery continuity of care regardless of race, religion, social status or demography to increase healthy maternal, fetal and neonatal outcomes and maternal/family satisfaction in the major life experience of pregnancy and childbirth.
This can be achieved with:
-
Access to education: lifestyle, pregnancy, labour, postnatal and parenting to optimise maternal, fetal, neonatal and family health.
-
Informed choices including models of care.
-
Individual holistic care encompassing physical, mental, spiritual and cultural needs.
-
Education of other staff, sharing personal knowledge and experience with midwifery and medical students, junior midwives, allied health staff and medical practitioners regarding midwifery-based care.
-
Respectful communication between care providers allowing sharing of information to individualise and therefore optimise women’s care.
-
Acting as a client advocate, respecting the rights of the woman and her family, negotiating alternative options where necessary.
